To the moon and back.
John Lewis, the global masters of Christmas advertising, set a new benchmark every year only to surpass it the next. All about love and walking that extra mile for family and friends, in 2015, however, the brand went beyond and aimed for the stars.
What they introduced was a heartwarming story of a seven year old girl and the Man on the Moon. Teaming up with Age UK, this £7M campaign did a little more than just advertising and reminded us that about one million elderly people in the UK go for a month or more without speaking to anyone– that Christmas can be a very lonely time for many.
The ad is beautifully narrated to Aurora’s version of ‘Half the World Away’, originally sung by Oasis. As if that was not enough to make us cry already, the story tenderly tugs at our heartstrings to leave behind more than just brand awareness, but a lesson in sharing happiness.
With ads on TV teasing the launch of this campaign, and upon release, life-sized Moon pop ups in stores, a phone game and a whole augmented reality app, John Lewis did everything to conquer all mediums of marketing and come out victorious!
