Swapan Parekh is an acclaimed Indian photographer known for blending documentary aesthetics with advertising photography, creating visually compelling narratives that challenge traditional norms. Born in 1966, Parekh was introduced to photography following the untimely passing of his father, Kishor Parekh, a pioneering Indian photojournalist. He pursued formal education in photojournalism and documentary photography at the International Center of Photography in New York.

Parekh's career spans multiple genres, including news, documentary, advertising, and personal photography. In the 1990s and 2000s, he brought a fresh documentary approach to Indian advertising, emphasizing a sense of spontaneity across images and crafting immersive, emotionally resonant campaigns. Notable for his meticulous attention to detail, Parekh's advertising work often blurred the line between reality and fiction, earning him several accolades, including the Advertising Photographer of the Year award in 2000. His images are always uncropped and unmanipulated.

His works, such as the celebrated exhibition Between Me & I, explore spontaneous, reflexive moments that transform ordinary scenes into profound artistic statements. Known for both black-and-white and colour photography, Parekh's images are characterized by their intricate compositions and nuanced interplay of form and emotion. Some of his standout works include campaigns depicting the ‘Death of the Computer’ and another for Killer Jeans, celebrated for his trademark innovative approach and dramatic visual style.

His works have been featured in prestigious publications like TIME, LIFE, American Photo, to name a few, and exhibited at renowned institutions, including the Tate Modern, Aperture, and FOAM. Parekh has received numerous honours, including the World Press Photo Award in 1994, and has served as a juror for the same competition multiple times.

His contributions to photography reflect a deep respect for the medium’s history and a commitment to its evolution, making him a significant figure in contemporary Indian photography. Picture by picture, moment by moment...it’s been over 40 years and counting for Swapan.
