Sharmishta Roy stands as one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated art directors and production designers. Born into a creative legacy—her father, Sudhendu Roy, was a legendary designer—she began her career assisting him before carving out her own acclaimed path.
Her enduring collaborations with Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions produced iconic films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and Rocky aur Raani ki Prem Kahaani.
Her elegant and emotionally resonant sets earned her three Filmfare Awards for Best Art Direction (Dil To Pagal Hai in 1998, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1999, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2002), along with multiple Zee Cine and IIFA Awards. She also received the National Film Award for Best Production Design for her work on M. F. Husain’s Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities.
Beyond her contributions to Hindi cinema, she expanded her creative palette by collaborating with esteemed filmmaker Mani Ratnam on Tamil films like OK Kanmani and Kaatru Veliyidai, embracing a design philosophy grounded in simplicity and authenticity.
Known for her exacting attention to detail and her ability to channel narrative through set design, Sharmishta views environments as silent storytellers.
