Philippe Le Sourd

Philippe Le Sourd is a French cinematographer. Born and raised in Paris during the 1960s, he developed his photography skills at the renowned film school of New Sorbonne University in the city. After completing his studies, he started his career as a general photographer's assistant. His breakthrough moment came when he had the opportunity to work as an assistant cameraman to Darius Khondi on the well-received art-house film "Delicatessen" (1991). This collaboration led to more opportunities, and he worked as the second camera alongside Khondi on "The City of Lost Children" (1995) and as a focus puller on Bernardo Bertolucci's captivating film "Stealing Beauty" (1996).

Over the following years, Philippe continued to work with European directors while occasionally venturing to the U.S. for commercial projects. His first major Hollywood feature was as a director of photography on Ridley Scott's romantic comedy-drama "A Good Year" (2006), which was set in Provence. Subsequently, he collaborated with Italian director Gabriele Muccino on the short film "Heartango" (2007), and their partnership continued with the art-house hit "Seven Pounds" (2008).

His successful work on commercials also caught the attention of Hollywood filmmakers. He began working with Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai on commercials and furthered their collaboration with the short film "There's Only One Sun" (2007). This led to an epic three-year project with Wong, resulting in the film "The Grandmaster" (2013), which earned Philippe his first Oscar nomination.
