Dr. A. L. Sharada

Dr. A. L. Sharada is a sociologist, researcher and media advocacy specialist with over three decades of experience in gender equality, social development and communication.

She has worked with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), the Central University of Hyderabad, SIFPSA and IIHMR, and provided consultancy to UNFPA, UNICEF India, AIWC Kanpur, Chetna and Sandhan Jaipur, among other organisations.

She joined Population First as Programme Director in 2003 and played a central role in shaping its initiatives, including Laadli, a campaign addressing gender discrimination and the declining sex ratio, and Amchi, which focuses on health and population issues. After leading the organisation for over two decades, she was appointed Trustee in 2024.

Her contributions include advancing gender sensitivity in media and advertising through the Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity. She was also invited by the US Department of State to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Programme on the role of NGOs in global gender issues.
