Sudhir Mishra is an Indian filmmaker known for his work as a director and screenwriter, with a career spanning over three decades. He is widely recognised for his socially and politically driven storytelling, often exploring themes of identity, power, and human relationships.
He began his career in the 1980s as an assistant director and screenwriter, working on films like ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’. He made his directorial debut with ‘Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin’ (1987), which won the National Film Award for Best Debut Film of a Director. Over the years, he has worked across films and long-form content, establishing himself as a key voice in parallel and mainstream Indian cinema.
His most notable works include ‘Dharavi’ (1992), ‘Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’ (2003), ‘Chameli’ (2004), and ‘Serious Men’ (2020), along with projects like ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin’, ‘Daas Dev’, and ‘Afwaah’. His films are known for their grounded narratives and engagement with social and political realities.
He has received multiple honours for his work, including three National Film Awards—for ‘Yeh Woh Manzil To Nahin’, ‘Main Zinda Hoon’, and ‘Dharavi’. He has also received the Filmfare Award for Best Story for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and was honoured with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government.
