Sanu John Varughese, ISC is a cinematographer whose work seamlessly spans feature films, advertising, and branded storytelling. Inspired early on by Kenyan photojournalist Mohamed Amin, Sanu embraced motion picture photography as his language of expression, making the camera an extension of his personality.
Armed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kerala University and a Master’s in Communication from Hyderabad Central University, he began his career in Bombay with TV18, shooting shows for BBC, Star Plus, and MTV before assisting celebrated cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran. He debuted as an independent cinematographer with Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon (2003).
Marked by visual precision, warmth, and a deep human connection. In advertising, Sanu has shaped the look of some of India’s most memorable campaigns, including Tanishq’s Mature Love and Diwali (ft. Deepika Padukone) and Aircel’s Thoda Extra. Over the years, he has collaborated with leading brands such as Coca-Cola, Cadbury, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Airtel, Tata, ITC Sunfeast (Mom’s Magic), and Tata Salt (Flavoritz), among many others.
Across cinema, Sanu’s craft transcends language and genre, with acclaimed credits in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films, including Vishwaroopam (2013), Hasee Toh Phasee (2014), Wazir (2016), Take Off (2017), Badhaai Ho (2018), Jersey (2019), Lootcase (2020), and Malik (2021).
