Take my money. Molson Coors’ big return to the Super Bowl after 30 years could not be just any other ad. It had to be an unmissable announcement of the brand’s comeback. What did we get? A sausage and a coaster for weapons and a sardine for nunchaku as two of the brand ambassadors fight for the spotlight in their own commercial! This cinematic masterpiece is an unmistakable combination of Mauro Chiarello’s cinematography and Ian Pons Jewell’s direction. For this ad, titled ‘The High Stakes Beer Ad’, the stakes were, in fact, pretty high. Anheuser-Busch’s exclusive deal with Super Bowl had been seeing other beer brands sidelining against it– which is precisely what they had to overcome. The high-intensity fight sequence and impeccable choreography were given a pulsating background music to build tension. What do you know, the ad did go on to become the biggest non-sporting event in its history and the most highly anticipated ad of the event! This Grab ad, titled ‘Some Gifts Take Time’, humorously breaks away from the typical serious and sentimental Mother’s Day advertisements we are accustomed to seeing annually. However, beyond all the laughter lies a depiction of a very real scenario for young Asian couples. Grab cleverly leverages this situation to emphasise the convenience of its instant delivery services, because while some gifts take time, Grab isn’t one of them. Through its unconventional storytelling and compelling performances (and let’s not forget the sensual dance!), the spot ingeniously delivers its message while tickling the funny bone. Part of Coinbase’s campaign, ‘Break the Cycle’, this ad reminds us that just because we are born into a system does not mean we have to live with it. The largest cryptocurrency exchange platform in the United States demonstrates this by weaving a narrative that progresses along the current world scenario where the future of a (talking) infant is as bleak as it gets– and then rewinding time to provide a better chance at life. There’s your winner. The brand urges us to break free from the cycle of perpetual debt and financial crisis by making the right choices. The narrative is witty, but only because it is the essential truth. No exaggeration. No romanticisation. Isn’t that precisely why it sells? They swiftly ditch their trousers– at their homes or in the middle of the street– and run to the nearest Lululemon store like their life depends on it. Meanwhile, onlookers can’t help but wonder if the men have completely lost their minds. That is probably the last thing one would want to see on their way to work, right? (𝘝𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥) This ad tackles a sensitive topic head-on, and makes you feel uncomfortable in a surprisingly relatable way! Equal pay for women and men is still not a reality in society at large, let alone Belgium, prompting the progressive women’s rights movement ZIJkant to initiate an Equal Pay Day. In Belgium, Equal Pay Day was celebrated on March 17th this year. This date holds significance as it represents the extent of the disparity in pay between women and men. Interestingly, If the pay gap narrows, Equal Pay Day moves to an earlier date in the year. Conversely, if the gap widens, it is pushed further. The spot underscores the absurdity of the situation by showcasing people’s strange and frantic reactions when confronted to disclose their salary. Despite efforts to promote transparency and equality, talking about salary remains a taboo, allowing gender discrimination to persist. Through its discomforting visuals and evocative soundscape, this ad sheds light on transparency and equal pay with the absurd stress reactions triggered in men by the ‘inconvenient question’. Robinson Department’s ad for their 2023 sale– what they call the “Robinson Salesation” deserved its own blockbuster of a spot. Titled ‘The Air Drummer’, this ad follows an absurd and witty narrative, which is humorously backed by cinematic music that rises to its crescendo when reflecting the mother’s undying love for her daughter. This unlikely concoction is captured with smart camera movements and just the right stretch of time to dramatise the dialogue delivery. We love us some melodramatic Thai commercials and heavy supermarket discounts, don’t we? Subpar office facilities? You can do better than this. Let us show you Kasikornbank’s recruitment ad as a Monday morning reminder to leave that toxic workplace behind and explore healthier environments! Thai commercials have a way of storytelling that is characteristic to them. Emotional ads leave us in tears, contemplating life, while the funny ones target just the right tropes to dramatise further into something extraordinarily bizarre and hilarious. This ad is no exception to their ingenuity. The hyperbolic camera magnification as a sombre voice over instigates us against corporate injustice adds to the satirical tone of the narrative. The background scores in the climax of each of the three instances, all performed on a different instrument, and the eccentric VFX used to reflect metaphorically the intimidating roles of the antagonists are a master stroke in the execution of this ad! Poor girl, certainly not the birthday bash she was expecting! A fun surprise that was planned for her turned into an even bigger surprise for the party planners themselves. In this witty ad for Lovable, titled ‘Surprise Party’, the brand cleverly addresses the issue of finding the right bra size, revealing that 70% of women wear the wrong one. Loveable subtly promotes its brand by focusing on the discomfort caused by ill-fitting bras rather than showcasing its products. Building on the idea that some women don’t wear their correct bra sizes and often take them off as soon as they reach home, the brand constructed a narrative around the relatability factor without resorting to vulgarity. The floating camera movements throughout the film adds a dynamic feel to the visuals while keeping the tone of the narrative subtle yet fairly confrontational.
